Safety First: Chrysler Will Offer Wireless Internet Access In 2009 Model Year

This can’t possibly be safe. Starting with the 2009 model year, Chrysler will offer in-car Internet access. The company is quick to point out that it’s not intended for the driver, but in the age of always being connected, how many of you could resist the urge to check Facebook while at a red light or in traffic?

Details on the service are still a little sketchy. We know it’ll be called UConnect Web, and that it’ll be powered by 3G. (That’s the same high-speed technology in the new iPhone.) The thing is, 3G isn’t available in all parts of the country. The big cities, sure, but those of you living in suburban bliss may be a little let down. Or, who knows, maybe Chrysler has developed a nationwide 3G network under our noses?
Chrysler is the first auto manufacturer to offer in-car Internet access.
Better watch your insurance rates. “Oh, you have Internet access in your car? You’re a risk. That’ll be an extra $100 per year, please.”
