Canon Rebel XS Is A Fine Choice For Budding Photographers
8 July 2008, 1:30 PM. By Alex Ferreyra

We’ve mentioned a fancy, high-end camera before, so here’s one for you Regular Joes out there. The Canon Rebel XS, due this August for $699, is the company’s newest entry level dSLR. It’s a good bet for those of you who want to get into photography without having to spend thousands of dollars, especially if all you’re gonna do is put your photos on Facebook or Flickr.
The camera has a 10.1-megapixel CMOS sensor and a 2.5-inch LCD. While 10.1 megapixels may not seem like a lot, trust us when we say that’s more than enough for an entry level dSLR. You’ll also find Live View, which is a shooting mode that uses the LCD as a viewfinder, sorta like a point-and-shoot. It’s not meant for all-the-time shooting, but rather when looking through the proper viewfinder is impossible (like when you’re holding the camera above your head, for example). It’s a neat, useful feature that has been creeping into SLRs for the past year or so.
So again, you could do a lot worse for your dollar if you’re in the market for a My First SLR.
