After doing battle over the weekend with someone old enough to order from the senior’s menu at IHOP, Manny Ramirez has a new image problem. Before knocking down 64-year-old Jack McCormick because of ticket problems, Ramirez’s eccentricities were laughable and even encouraged. But now that this violent side has emerged, people are wondering if the Red Sox are the best place for the All-Star to be, especially considering Boston’s on the hook for $20 million next year. But since this being Manny Ramirez, the controversy for him has held as much weight as a fart in the windstorm.
“I can’t worry about what people think,” Ramirez said before last night’s series opener between his Red Sox [team stats] and the Tampa Bay Rays at Tropicana Field.
And of course when you do bring up “long term” with regard to Ramirez, you can’t not mention that $20 million albatross that hangs around in the form of the club’s contract option on its left fielder.
“I don’t care about any contract,” Ramirez said. “I’m not thinking about that.”
This is a guy who has $75 grand in uncashed checks in his glove compartment when he played in Cleveland and was willing to give them out. You have to admit, out of anyone in universe to utter those words, Manny Ramirez is the only one you’d believe not to care about $20 million contracts.
