Ah, it seems like it was just last year when Pele was trotting the globe to promote soccer, being told when to be honored and shit. Well, no more suckas. That was the old Pele, and he’s made enough money from his million endorsements to tell MF’ers like FIFA’s Sepp Blatter how it is without having to worry about losing things to petty larceny or contemptuous ad execs. Example one–last week Blatter compared the Cristiano Ronaldo contract stand-off to modern-day slavery, something the bingo-enthusiast agreed with. Well, that doesn’t fly exactly with Pele who A) thinks Ronaldo should honor his contract and B) is black. We think B might be a little more of an impetus for the blow up.

The top-earning Portugal winger concurred with Blatter’s “modern slavery” comments, which upset football’s first black superstar.

“You are a slave if you work without a contract or you don’t get paid,” said Pele, a three-time World Cup winner with Brazil, which abolished slavery 120 years ago. “If you have a contract then in any job you have to finish the contract.

“I think that when he finishes his contract, then he should be free to go wherever he wants to go.”

While we don’t totally agree with the whole “see the contract through” statement, at least when Curt Flood made the slavery argument against MLB here in the ’60s to break contracts, dudes were getting traded for cartons of Lucky Strikes. It wasn’t about nurse-screwing metrosexuals making 100G’s a week.
