Don’t look now, but Pioneer has just announced the development of a new optical disc that holds an amazing 400GB of data. Dual-layer Blu-ray discs can hold a maximum of 50GB of data, meaning this new disc is eight times as spacious.
And the news gets better.
Pioneer says the disc is such that manufacturers only have to slightly alter current Blu-ray player designs to work with the new disc. The less manufacturers have to tinker with their players, the cheaper it’ll be for all of us.

The current prototype is read-only, so recording 400GB of data onto a single disc is still just a pipe dream.
But can you even imagine that, 400GB on a single disc? Think how excited you were by 4.7GB DVD-Rs back in the day.
