Soy Dogs At Ballparks Is Messing In God’s Domain

If you’ve ever lived with a vegetarian, odds are one night you came home drunk and accidentally used their soy dogs instead of your hot dogs as a pre-sleep booze soaker. Remember when you hurled that tofu out of your system, cursing the day you answered the ad on Craigstlist to live there? Well, thanks to Johanna McCoy, half of baseball’s fans will have the opportunity to make that same mistake at a ballpark near them. That’s because she started a movement to get stadiums across the country to offer a veggie alternative to the typical ballpark fare because vegetarian baseball fans can’t live on peanuts and nacho cheese alone.

The Chicago White Sox were the first big league team to offer veggie dogs, McCloy says, and 14 more followed, among them the Giants.

Well, Giants eating tofu we can understand, but the White Sox? We thought that was more of a Cub thing, if you catch our drift (and if you don’t just keep reading).

“I just thought it needed to happen because there was a certain percentage of the fan base at any given stadium that probably would not be eating at all, would bring their own food or would resort to eating only peanuts… It seemed like it made good business sense. It never dawned on me that it would take off like it did.

“She’s such a good advocate that she sort of makes it competitive between ballparks, which is cool,” says Sandie Filipiak, director of concessions at AT&T Park. “It’s like, ‘Who’s got the most vegetarian choices?’ “
