So we have an issue with the new nickname that Joakim Soria, the Kansas City Royals’ ace reliever has picked up–”The Mexicutioner.” It’s not for any PC reason—pfft, perish the thought—but the unoriginality of it. It sounds like something the guys at an ad agency would come up for a new dish at some third rate restaurant (it’s no Marmalard, that’s for sure). But in Kansas City, people are all about “The Mexicutioner” and wondering where this sobriquet came from. After some digging, it turns out that like most things in this day and age, the name’s origin can be traced back to a blog. The voice of the people, and this is what they could come up with?
And what about us, you ask? We would’ve gone with “Tres Equis,” but what do we know? (Psst, spread it around, Tres Equis is the new hotness.)

Bob Dutton, Royals beat writer for The Star, says the The Mexicutioner rnickname didn’t start with him. WHB’s Kevin Kietzman, who did launch the T-shirts, also said he can’t claim to be the origin of the nickname. Both agree that the nickname appeared to start on the excellent baseball website, ranyontheroyals.

While some folks think the nickname may be offensive or racially insensitive, Soria isn’t one of them.

“He likes it,” Dutton said. “He wears the T-shirt and so do a lot of other Royals.”

That means nothing—peer pressure gets the best of those trying to fit in. Plus, knowing how cheap the Royals are, wearing any promotional shirt handed to him and smiling was probably part of his new contract extension.
