Tony Gonzalez Is Pure Political Gold

Considering who he has throwing to him this season, saving a man’s life might be the highlight of Kansas City Chiefs’ Tony Gonzalez’s year. Yesterday, he got props from both the George Bush and Barack Obama for his heroic act, and he’s getting letters from all over the world saying the same thing. We at MachoChip think this is a sure sign that Gonzalez should be the next Vice Presidential candidate for whoever wants to win. He’s an NFL all-pro, which proves he’s tough for the men; women like a sensitive man, so his vegetarianism helps him out there; plus he’s part Mexican, which plays well with most of the elusive Hispanic demo–although YMMV on that one.
The Kansas City Chiefs Pro Bowl tight end met Sen. Barack Obama during a campaign stop in California, and the Democratic candidate for president congratulated him for stopping a man from choking to death. About the same time, Gonzalez opened his mail and read a letter from the president and first lady Laura Bush.
“The President said, ‘Thank you for helping out your fellow human being,’ ” Gonzalez said Saturday. “He said he and Laura wished me good luck in the upcoming season.”
Looks like someone’s got Tony on his fantasy football team “Shock and Awesome.” But more important than Fantasy Football (just go with me, here) are the long term implications of a football player saving a man’s life that choker Ken Hunter expounded on.
“But now, looking back, I think with all the negative stuff that’s in the media these days about NFL players and athletes in general, when a story like that comes out, it really grabs people’s attention. I know it was an incredible situation the way it came down. I believe things happen for a reason. Hopefully, there’ll be a domino affect.”
Considering the time they put in at the United Way twice a year, let’s not hold our breaths for any expanded altruism from football players and just be happy they’re pounding nails into housing frames with their pent up aggression and not random bystanders on the street (or the club).
