When the EPL season came to a close last year, the buzz around the Tottehnham Spurs was more akin to a chorus of caws coming from vultures circling White Hart Lane. Even though Juande Ramos won the Carling Cup after replacing Martin Jol midway through the season, there was discontentment from the players, and talk of the biggest names on the team–including their starting strikers Dimitar Berbatov and Robbie Keane–leaving. So why are the Spurs, with Keane now at Liverpool and Berbatov having one foot out the door, so upbeat look at next season? Because while everyone worries about Cristiano Ronaldo’s jacuzzis, they’ve added pieces like Giovani Dos Santos from Barcelona, David Bentley from Blackburn, Croation Luka Modric and now are on the verge of even snatching the crown jewel of Euro 2008, Andrei Arshavin, right under the nose of Chelsea and Roman Abramovich. Well, that is unless Abramovich decides to pay Arshavin’s current team Zenit off with oil wells, but we don’t see that happening.
“I am very optimistic about this deal but it is not easy — as usual with Russian clubs,” [Arshavin's agent Dennis Lachter] told Sky Sports News. “The next few days will see if he can confirm this move to Spurs. Andrei likes the way Juande Ramos is going to play at Tottenham and this is the main point of our decision — not only the money but the desire of the manager to have the player.”
So what say you, ‘Chippers? With a total Juande makeover–10 players leaving, 6 coming–does Tottenham have enough to make to the a top four position next year? Or will they fall flat as has been their M.O. for the past few years?
