BitTorrent Tracker What.cd Releases User-Created Album
18 August 2008, 2:15 PM. By Daniel Mauser

Invite-only BitTorrent tracker What.cd, which specializes in music, isn’t merely about downloading the latest Oasis single or The Game album for fee. No, no, it’s goes much deeper than that. The site fosters community, and encourages up-and-coming musicians to release their best work on the site, for free. The community then gets to listen to the music, and with any luck, truly talented musicians get “noticed” by the right people. And then you’re a rock star.
That’s what makes the release of The What CD so interesting.
What.cd just released for download The What CD, which is a compilation of the best user-submitted music to date. There’s 19 songs on the album from all sorts of genres, from mainstream (or is it alternative?) rock to bleep-bloop techno to something that sounds like riot grrrl.
The album has been released in several different formats, including V0 MP3 and FLAC, a lossless codec.
So to anyone who says these music BitTorrent sites only exist to put the likes of Brittney Spears in the poor house—she’s already in the crazy house, right?—they really need to reconsider their position.
Remember, the site is invite-only, so you’ll have to know someone to get in. That’s how these things work, for better or worse.
