While we’re a little open to hyperbole (sue us, we’re a blog), the Chinese people have a gift for it that only years of living under Communist rule could create. That’s why amidst an exit earlier than any of their fans anticipated, the Chinese men’s soccer team have become the WORST! THING! EVER! to happen to China according to fans. Why? Because they didn’t live up to their expectations in a sport the country absolutely loves, so they’ve become pariahs. Jesus, if we did that, the US Men’s Basketball team wouldn’t have been able to leave their houses since 2002.

Li Chengpeng, a soccer-writer whose typical wisecracks earned him a considerable fanbase, pledged never to write about soccer following Chinese team’s humiliating exit at the Olympic Games. “I think I have had enough. I wrote about soccer because it brought me some fun, but now what I got from Chinese soccer was sheer hurt and disappointment. So I decided to call it quits,” he said.

“It should have been a chance for Chinese soccer to be honored, but in the end it was dishonored… [n]ow Chinese soccer is confronted with the biggest ever crisis, our grassroots is withering, our professional league is also spiraling downward and can produce few quality players. Who should be responsible for all these mess-ups?” he asked.

Well that’s a trick question they can’t answer–the Chinese government, of course. If they just gave Tibet their props, they could get the Shaolin Soccer guys on their team and mop up the competition. The Soccer Gods frown upon human rights violations, China, especially the Buddhist contingent.
