While the fans of the Matamoros, Mexico Little League team that were one win away from the championship were saddened by their loss to Hawaii, one fan wasn’t. Marlins’ third baseman and Mexican national team player Jorge Cantu is a huge supporter of the club, and not just because his godfather’s the pee wee team’s president. Cantu addressed the team before their games against Venezuela and Hawaii, and while he couldn’t hypnotize them to beat Hawaii, he knows that their loss is something to build on. Cue “One To Grow On” jingle and rising star…

“They’re young kids and they’re going to win and lose, but their performance was incredible,” Cantu said. “To make it to the final is something that should be mentioned, especially in Mexico, so everybody knows how capable Mexico is in a world baseball tournament.”

“I’m sure they were a little sad, but they finished with their heads high,” Cantu said. “Hopefully in the World Baseball Classic next year we’ll respond so the entire republic knows what Mexico has in baseball.”

Damn little kids, leaving it to the grown up to represent their country. And we don’t know what Cantu’s so cocky about. Considering what happened in Beijing, the fact that it’s not taekwando might prove troubling for the Mexicans taking on the world next year.
