With all the circus surrounding the slant-eyed pictorial, have members of Spain’s national basketball team decided to shut out any media personnel who doesn’t speak Spanish? That seems to be the case after the US team blew them out the other day and one of the team’s members, Juan Carlos Navarro, tried to use the tried and true method anyone attempting to get out of a conversation. He used the “me no speakie English” route, which might have worked when he was living in Memphis, Tennessee and trying to get out of a ticket, but not here at the Olympics.

Spain guard Juan Carlos Navarro, formerly of the Memphis Grizzlies, did come out to talk to the Spanish media for about five minutes in the mixed zone interview area. After he was done with his home country folks, I asked him a question. He responded by saying, “My English not very good.”

Yeah about that…

I told him, “Well, it was really good when you were playing for the Grizzlies. I interviewed you once by your locker.” Navarro was stunned when I called him out and I could see that he understood every word. If they beat the Americans, I’m sure his English would have been better than mine.

Not that we support what they did, but since they’ve been vilified by the American and British press, we’d give them a pass for using the “No English” card. It’s just a preventative from embarrassing themselves anymore than they have already.
