NBC has been running extensive segments on American swimmer Michael Phelps over the last few days. And why shouldn’t they? He’s the single most sought after Olympic athlete, recognized worldwide and loved by his compatriots. So, it’s a no-brainer to have recurring segments riveting fans with anecdotes about his childhood, his physique, and, um, his healthy diet. In fact, that diet is precisely what everyone’s been talking about in the last 24 hours.

Asked to describe what his routine is here when he’s not in the pool attempting to break Mark Spitz’s gold-medal record, Phelps replied, “I’m eating a lot of pasta and pizza. I’m eating a lot of carbs. And sleeping as much as I can. I think just about every morning I’ve woken up at 4:30 or 5. It takes me a while to fall back asleep, but I do for about an extra half hour. It takes me a while to get up, but it’s the Olympics, it’s what you have to do.”

At an 8k-10k calorie diet, it’s no surprise that the Olympic champion eats more like your Uncle Gordo and sleeps like him too. We’re positive he can get away with such a routine because his parents probably paid doctors to inject him with that “mouse-potato pill” stuff years ago. That’s not true.

Pasta and pizza? That’s Phelps’ gold-medal secret?
