How many of you own a Blu-ray player? How many of you who answered “yes” have a non-PS3 Blu-ray player?
Not too many, we bet. That’s something that the movie studios need to work on, according to a recent study.
Long story short: many people are happy with their regular DVD players, and don’t plan to upgrade until next year, if at all.

Right, so a study conducted by ABI Research found that more than half of respondents said they had no plan whatsoever to buy a Blu-ray player. About one-quarter of respondents said they would get a player next year. Even if those numbers don’t hold up beyond the sample size into the general population, it’s still bad news for Blu-ray, which was supposed to be running wild by now, several months after HD DVD (remember that?) went kaput.
Apparently consumers are fine with watching regular DVDs of movies for the time being. Who could blame them (us)? Movies like Semi-Pro and The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants don’t need to be seen in full 1080p to be, uh, enjoyed.
It seems the only thing Blu-ray has going for it is the PS3, which is leading the line of Blu-ray sales. (It’s the best player for the money right now, by the way.) As Sony makes more and more PS3s, drops the price, improves manufacturing capabilities, and so on, prices for Blu-ray should drop across the board.
Our advice, if you absolutely need a Blu-ray player today, the PS3 is what to get. Otherwise, feel free to wait for a little while. You’re not missing too much.
