Playing Fantasy Football Costs Us $100 Per League, Employers $9.2 Billion

It’s that time of the year where significant others go missing for stretches at a time… friends you haven’t talked to in a while start emailing you… and suddenly starters from East Bumville State become bigger crushes than said significant others. That’s right, it’s time for fantasy football! But while you and your peeps are thrilled, your boss may not be. That’s because the nerds at research firm Challenger, Gray & Christmas have broken down the numbers and figured out that the time employees spend on fantasy football during business hours costs companies $9.2 Billion, and only part of that is because of the paper used up to print up draft sheets from Rotowire.
[T]he 17-week National Football League schedule will subtract 1.19 hours of productivity per week from about 17 million Americans who participate. Using salaries information supplied by the Fantasy Sports Association, the average fantasy footballer earns $80,000 per year with 70 percent of the participants earning between $50,000 and $149,000.
There are so many numbers wrong in that paragraph, it’s not even funny. Have you ever tried to trade in the middle of the day with a stubborn owner? That alone takes like three hours. Reading daily updates, that’s about an hour a day. And don’t get me started about “the average fantasy footballer earns $80,000 per year.” If the fantasy sports message boards are any indication, people making $80K a year are horrible spellers, can’t form coherent thoughts and say things that would make these guys blush.
