Hey, Argentina, you know how close you were to starting a riot yesterday? Well, not a riot, but a very stern reprimand by the soccer-mad Chinese fans who visited Beijing’s Worker’s Stadium to see your stars Lionel Messi and Juan Carlos Riquelme play? The Argies, who were closing out the medal qualifying round against Serbia, came out to a “lukewarm reception” from the fans because the team wanted to rest the hurt Messi and Riquelme. Not only that, but the masses decided to quickly change sides and root for the Serbs. Not that the Argentines cared, giving the fans a great big “Che, Boludo” when asked about the incident.
“The Chinese public have to understand that our target is to win the gold medal and they needed to be rested,” Batista told reporters. “I apologise if people were upset but we’re thinking about the best interests of the team. If they were annoyed, then that’s bad luck but there are other players who have to play, not just Lionel Messi.”
Yeah, that’s true. If anyone understands the need for swapping out talent for the good of the nation, it should definitely be the Chinese. And we’re not even talking about swapping out Carlos Tevez for a handsome face.
