The Chevy Volt: Detroit’s Car Is So Popular There’s A ‘We Want One’ List

Have you pre-ordered your Chevy Volt yet? Don’t worry, there’s only some 34,000 people worldwide who also have their hearts set on the electric car.
And production of it doesn’t even come out till 2010. When was the last time an American car has received this much attention?
The Chevy Volt, which GM introduced to the world at last year’s Detroit Auto Show, is supposed to be Detroit’s saving grace: an affordable electric car that doesn’t look like a toy. One guy was so impressed with it that he started a Web site dedicated to it only a few days after GM first unveiled it. Even better, he started a “I want this” list on the site. To date, some 34,000 people from all over the world have signed the petition. (We say “petition” because the list also asks GM to increase production of the Volt beyond its committed number of 10,000 (or so) when it starts in 2010.) There’s even four guys from Afghanistan who want the car. So yeah, pretty popular.
GM hasn’t set a price for it, but estimates put it in the $30-$40,000 range. Not exactly as cheap as a Corolla, but certainly reasonable, especially if helps ween people off sweet, delicious oil.
