The internet has always been a recruiting tool for companies looking for accountants, tech guys and porn stars. But now the the MI6, England’s spy service, has used it to look for new recruits. In particular they’re using Facebook in lieu of combing elite universities to find the next James Bond. When you chat, one of three pop-up ads come up–one targeting those bored with their jobs, another focusing in on college grads and the last promoting the agency’s place in history. We can’t believe none of them has a dancing alien offering a free iPod Nano or low mortgage interest rate. That would’ve gotten the recruits in.
“A number of public channels are used to promote job opportunities in the organisation and Facebook is a recent example of this,” said a Foreign Office spokeswoman. MI6 runs agents in foreign countries and says it wants its officers to “reflect the society” they serve.
But since then the organisation has run newspaper and radio adverts. Those on Facebook have already generated a lot of interest. “There has been a very good response so far,” said a spokeswoman.
Yeah, you know what else has been getting a good response on Facebook? The “Save The Old Facebook” campaign. Isn’t it a little scary to anyone that we might be putting the fate of the free world in the same hands as those who couldn’t even save Scrabulous?
