It’s been almost three years since we first got a glimpse of former MLB pitcher Ugeth “Ubie” Urbina behind bars in Venezuela. It was surreal image because his Von Dutch hat was still on, and it looked like he could leave at any second. But… he’s still in there, serving a 14-year sentence for the attempted murder of five farm workers on his property by trying to hack them with a machete and attempting to pour gasoline on them. Yeah, that’s worth it. Now ESPN Deportes; “Baseball expert” Ernesto Jerez is going behind the walls of Penitenciaria General de Venezuela, the maximum-security prison in San Juan de los Morros where the former pitcher now resides to ask him questions that, honestly, should’ve been e-mailed.
Jerez: How would you describe your life as a player compared to your life now in prison?
Urbina: “Well, the difference is huge. When I played baseball, I had all the comforts and all the success. I was in a completely different world… here in jail, it’s the complete opposite; you begin to see what suffering can be from a young age.”
Really? “Hey, on the outside you were a millionaire and had all the freedoms that life in the States and back home afforded you. Now you’re in a max security prison in fucking Venezuela. How are things different?” Needless to say, we’re going to be watching September 28-30th to find out of their level of discourse rises above the ridiculous.
