What the UNC Tar Heels couldn’t use in 6′8 Puerto Rican Orlando Melendez the Harlem Globetrotters have. Melendez, who suited up for the Tar Heels from 1997-2001 and has been kicking around PR and Brazilian leagues, is set to become the first player from the island to be part of the ruin of the Washington Generals’ psyche. We hope he brings enough Cuchifritos for everyone!
The World Famous Harlem Globetrotters have signed the first Puerto Rican-born player in the team’s storied history, inking 6-8 dunking sensation Orlando “El Gato” Melendez. El Gato, a native of Ponce, Puerto Rico, and a former North Carolina Tar Heel, will join four other Globetrotter rookies as the team opens training camp in New York on Monday, Sept. 29.
This has got to make him favorite to be Grand Marshall in this year’s Puerto Rican day parade, no? Being a Globetrotter is about as awesome as you can get–you get to throw confetti at people, use ladders to score points and wear really garish uniforms under the pretense of it being cool. Hey, cahce-wise, it’s a step up from being a Charlotte Bobcats, we can tell you that.
