Golden State Warriors guard Monta Ellis has joined a pretty elite club… too bad it has nothing to do with his basketball skills. The newly signed, $66 million man is now linked to the Dodgers’ Jeff Kent and the Lakers’ Vlad Radmonovic as players who hurt themselves doing something stupid their contracts specifically told them not to, and tried to get out of it by lying. Kent busted his wrist on an ATV, but said he did it washing his truck (!); Radmonovic separated his shoulder snowboarding, but told the Lakers he slipped and fell; and now Ellis tore a deltoid ligament in his ankle and sustained a high-ankle sprain in August, which he said happened during a pick up game of ball. But now the truth comes out that he did it during a “low speed” incident on a moped. At least that we could see trying to get out of.

The cause of Ellis’ injury was unclear, even to Golden State officials, immediately after he hurt himself in late August. He initially told vice president Chris Mullin the injury occurred during a pickup basketball game, before coming clean about the moped mishap.

The Lakers faced a similar situation two seasons ago when forward Vladimir Radmanovic separated his shoulder in a snowboarding accident in Park City, Utah. Radmanovic, who initially said he slipped on a patch of ice, missed about two months and was fined $500,000, or roughly one-tenth of his salary.

Yeah, but when you’re riding a snowboard, you have at least the air of being cool (and snow bunnies around you). It’s worth possibly getting injured over. Driving around Mississippi on a moped doesn’t have that same cache. Unless he was wearing a shark-skin suit, listening to Morrisey and drinking a cappuccino while driving. That would’ve been awesome, but alas…
