Saying Goodbye To The Old Yankee Stadium Brings Out The Old Yanks… Even The Ones Who Are Dead

So last night was literally the last night a Major League Baseball game was played at Yankee Stadium (barring a Yankees perfect end-of-season run and a total collapse by the Red Sox… so yeah, it was the last game). Everything went off without a hitch, meaning that there was no more violence than at your usual game and no one pulled out crowbars to yank out seats during the last serenade of Frank Sinatra’s “New York, New York.” Maybe it was because everyone was too verklempt from seeing past greats on the field like Reggie Jackson, Yogi Berra, Lou Gehrig… wait. Isn’t he dead? They named a whole disease after him, remember? Well, they’re the Yanks, and with a payroll like that, would you put bringing people back from the dead above their capabilities?
There was no mention of Torre, Mariano Rivera or Roger Clemens. Don Mattingly was shown on the video board for about five seconds. Joe DiMaggio and Lou Gehrig were represented by actors playing the part of deceased Yankees greats.
Okay so they got all Civil War recreation with Joltin’ Joe and Gehrig. That makes sense. If they had the ability to bring people back from the dead, odds are they’d be trying to fill out their pitching staff with the likes of Babe Ruth and the arms of Whitey Ford and Ron Guidry.
