When the Denver Nuggets’ star forward Carmelo Anthony was named one of the Hispanic Business magazine’s most influential Hispanics in America, a lot of people were surprised… like Carmelo Anthony himself. It’s not so much that Carmelo Anthony doesn’t identify with being Hispanic–his dad was Puerto Rican, he has a PR flag tattooed on his hand and he married Lala Vasquez (but she’s a heina, so any guy would want to get some of that). But when your dad dies when you’re two, and he was the true link to your heritage, identity has a tendency to fade. But undeterred by that little blip on his Hispanic radar, Anthony has taken it upon himself to show his true Latin roots by gunning after everyone ahead of him on the list just because. So, watch out Antonio Villaraigosa and opera singer Elaine Alvarez–Carmelo’s coming after you!

“I want to be No. 1,” Anthony said after learning he was on the list. “That’s my goal. I’ve got to see who’s on the list and see what I can do to top (them).” The 24-year-old former Syracuse University phenom said he plans to visit Puerto Rico next summer and thinks he still has family there.

“It would be the first time I actually get to really be there for a long period of time,” Anthony said. “People can really see me and interact while I’m there.”

That’s great that he “thinks” he still has family there. Luckily he’s going to be there for a long time because that’s a lot of doors he’s going to be knocking unless he breaks down and pays the $120.99 for a ancestry.com account. Something tell us one of the most influential Hispanics in the country can afford it.
