Macho Looks: Working Class Is Very Hot Right Now
24 October 2008, 4:00 PM. By Alex Ferreyra

The New York Times points us to a fashion trend homeboys have been rocking for decades. The flannel shirt and khaki pants look is, apparently, must-have in times of financial instability. “When the going gets tough, the tough shop the hardware aisle,” the Times says. Luckily, if you’re Joe Cholo, you’re already 3/4 of the way there. Just tuck those khakis into a pair of rubber boots and firme!
“Those clothes are always going to look right,” said Ms. Linnett, the Lucky creative director, referring to Filson Mackinaw jackets or Aran Island sweaters or footwear like the Wellington made by Hunter, a field boot that essentially weds the cobbler’s craft to bicycle-tube technology to create footgear so resolutely practical and clunky it is, contradictorily, chic.
If you’re not convinced, think about this: not only will you look stylish, but in these tumultuous financial times, the last thing a woman wants to bank on is, well, a banker. Now, walk into the party looking like a plumber and you’re practically home free because, as designer Isabel Toledo says, these clothes say “you can count on them [...] The construction tells me they’re going to be around a long time.” Check out more looks below.
