The Beckham Experiment In L.A. Is On Hiatus—Galaxy Is Loaning Becks To AC Milan

As the MLS season winds down, the Los Angeles Galaxy have decided to lend out their most precious and expensive toy to AC Milan. During the January transfer window, David Beckham will be heading to the Serie A club to play for the sixth-place team. The transfer makes sense for everyone involved–Becks gets to keep fit and his hopes alive for an English national team bid, as coach Fabio Capello said he wouldn’t use un-active players; the Galaxy get some cash to pay off some of his contract; and while AC Milan is in sixth place, they’re really only two wins from overtaking rivals Inter Milan for first in the league. But is their signing coming a few years too late to be effective? AC’s current track record suggests that maybe it is.
In the last two years Milan have signed Ronaldo, Ronaldinho, Andrei Shevchenko and now Beckham, but all four players seem to be long past their best.
Ronaldo looked overweight and unfit during his brief and unsuccessful time in Milan, Shevchenko is a shadow of the player who left Milan for Chelsea just over two years ago and Ronaldinho is not the same player who was twice crowned world player of the year, although he is showing glimpses of his old self at times.
Maybe AC Milan believes Becks is an rusty tool that was left out in the shitstorm known as the MLS. Whatever the reason, we don’t think he’s the player they need to make that final push. The true winner here is Becks whose obsession on playing for the English national team is kept on going with his lack of a vacation.
