It must have been as bad as we said it would be in the Kansas City Chiefs’ locker room when TE Tony Gonzalez showed up yesterday. After whining to FOX Sports’ Jay Glazer that he was “pissed off” his team didn’t trade him to a contender before the deadline, we opined that Gonzalez would be greeted with disgust when he finally saw his teammates he so desperately wanted to get away from.
We must have been right, since Gonzalez held a team meeting following the interview to apologize to his fellow Chiefs for his, shall we say, insensitive remarks.

He described the past few days as “a high-stress situation.”

“It was a sad situation. It was confusing. I thought a deal was going to get struck. When it came and went, I was somewhat shocked that it didn’t go down.”

He said the team was understanding.

“All I want to do is play football and win football games. That’s what I told my teammates today. They understand it. I think the fans understand. I’ve been here 12 years. I’ve given everything I have.”

Gonzalez repeats in the story that he had heard a rumor that the Chiefs were offered a third-round pick by some unknown team and still did not pull the trigger on the trade. Team executives have denied this, and state that no appropriate offer was made for Gonzalez.
The real crux of the issue here is Gonzalez age. He’s 32 and has yet to be a champion. He signed a major extension last year, and then watched his team shift into rebuilding mode and dump all the veterans. And, if we’re gonna be frank, the Chiefs suck. He’s stuck on a terrible team with no chance to win…thus making it perfectly understandable that he wants to be traded to a contender.
He just shoulda thought about how that was going to sound when he said it out loud.
