Buck Burnette Called Obama The N-Word, Got Cut From The UT Football Team, Is Sorry
10 November 2008, 9:30 AM. By Alex Ferreyra

You guys heard about the University of Texas sophomore, backup offensive [Ed: Ha!] lineman Buck Burnette who wrote something racist on his Facebook page on election night, right? After posting the phrase, “all the hunters gather up, we have a #$%&er in the whitehouse,” (he actually did bleep out his own word), the silly boy was turned in to coach Mack Brown and promptly let go from the team Wednesday. Way to go Mack, though we wonder if his dismissal would have been as expedient were he a better player. Anyway, Burnette deleted his Facebook page once the press got a hold of the story and went nuts last week, but not before posting the following apology to his teammates:
Clearly I have made a mistake and apologized for it and will pay for it. I received it as a text message from an acquaintance and immaturely put it up on facebook in the light of the election. Im not racist and apologize for offending you. I grew up on a ranch in a small town where that was a real thing and I need to grow up. I sincerely am sorry for being ignorant in thinking that it would be ok to write that publicly and apologize to you in particular. I have to be more mature than to put the reputation of my team at stake and to spread that kind of hate which I dont even believe in. Once again, I sincerely apologize.
If the guy was 20 years older, we might not believe him, but we’ve known enough idiots like this who think such words can actually be thrown around as a joke without having serious ramifications. So, he probably really will learn a lot from this embarrassing episode. Having just returned from our home state of Texas, we have to say the place has a long way to go and it’s not surprising that a young kid (white or Latino) would have such idiocy about black people bred into him. Here’s hoping things change down there as much as they are in the rest of the world.
