Has reality television ever brought us anything good? Sure, we could point to Daisy De La Hoya as some positive evidence, but most of the offerings have been contrived and, of course, lame as hell. At least we could always be somewhat happy that no one respectable had ever stooped into the reality realm.
Until now. The Sacramento Kings have announced plans to degrade their NBA franchise through Rebuilding the Kingdom, a Mark Burnett reality drama that will focus on the trials and tribulations of the Maloof Brothers trying making the team a winner again.
Is Reggie Theus ready for his close up?
In the vein of “The Restaurant,” this look at a high-stakes, high-pressure work environment will not only profile a team of talented players and coaches on the comeback trail, but will delve into the unique everyday challenges inherent in running an NBA franchise. Viewers will be given unprecedented access as executives rebrand the Kings, strategize on how to keep the 17,000-seat Arco Arena full, and keep the Sacramento community engaged while the team develops.
“We are thrilled to continue our expansion into television with the King of Reality TV,” said Maloof Television Chairman/CEO Phil Maloof. “We are honored at the opportunity to be a part of Mark Burnett’s family of hits.”
“This project will be a unique experience for the television viewer,” said Mark Burnett, President of Mark Burnett Productions. “We are committed to creating fun and innovative programming and with the Maloofs allowing this type of access to their organization, this is a great fit.”
While the Maloofs might think this is just a fantastic idea, we find this to be perhaps the most bush league, amateurish publicity stunt in the history of professional sports. The whole reality show gimmick is suited to a minor league team, fellas, not a premiere NBA franchise.
How bad will this be? Just remember, the Maloofs’ biggest production to date is Living Lohan, a virtually unwatchable reality show about Lindsay Lohan’s no-talent family. Think about that.
