Cesc Fabregas Handed Arsenal Captaincy After William Gallas Goes Nutso

Cesc Fábregas hasn’t been having the greatest of seasons for Arsenal. But that didn’t prevent team manager Arsne Wenger from promoting him to team captain after William Gallas’ collection of latest missteps as head figure, like calling his teammates a bunch of worthless jackasses (we think it loses something in the translation from French). The 21-year-old Spaniard takes over a team that’s languishing in fifth place and has looked to be just waiting for the season to be over. Wenger, for his part, wasn’t too hard on Gallas considering the Benedict Arnold act he pulled on his team. He just called him a big pussy who couldn’t take the pressure of the big time.
“No.” He did, however, suggest that wearing the armband ultimately detracted from Gallas’s – and perhaps the team’s – performances. “He took all the team’s problems to heart,” said Wenger. “And he was working as captain in a very difficult media environment, he was under big pressure. At some stage you don’t want that pressure to affect the team.”
Gallas was kicked off the team, but has been asked to come back for the team’s Champion’s League tilt against Kiev. Won’t that be an awkward reunion for everyone involved? Sure the rumors are that the Gunners are trying to get rid of him during the January transfer window, but what till then? It’ll be an awkward couple of months for a team that can’t afford to hold their dicks at the middle of the table for much longer.
