Could David Beckham Wind Up At Newcastle United… With Landon Donovan?

Now it’s time to play one of our favorite games that we’ve admittedly been breaking out a lot of lately—Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego…. David Beckham Golden Balls Edition. But unlike the past where we’ve just missed him heading off to Milan or ditching Salma Hayek, we’re going to play the future tense of the game and wonder where he’ll end up after his Milan gig. If you said L.A., get out of here, we don’t want you on our team. If you said England, you can stay, but don’t eat any of the chips and guacamole. If you said EPL’s Newcastle United, you’ve got to be Philip Anschutz, owner of the Galaxy and reported front-runner to buy the historic club. And if your answer was Newcastle with Galaxy teammate Landon Donovan, you’re either crazy or Landon Donovan. In either case… leave with the first guy.
There, according to several newspapers, the race to purchase the English Premier League club is down to only two serious names — and one of them is Philip F. Anschutz, whose AEG company tentacles are global in reach.
Were Anschutz to buy Newcastle United, it could open the door for Beckham to return to the Premier League and play at the level he needs to in order to maintain his place on England’s national team. It would also give Donovan the chance to move to Europe, as he wants to do, without leaving the AEG fold… It’s all a long shot, of course, but for the moment even the speculation is intriguing.
Eh, we don’t know if even Donovan would be down for it. Rumblings are that the front runner (again) for the Honda Player Of The Year Award wasn’t too thrilled with Becks’ move to Milan, and he’s also currently training with Bayern Munich, which is a steinigen’s throw from his former club Bayer Leverkusen. If we were a betting blog (which we aren’t… yet), we’ll take the odds he’s going to stay in L.A. even if Becks and ‘Schutz head over to Newcastle.
