Gina Carano v. Cris Cyborg Is On, Once They Find A Place To Work

Even though her promotion, EliteXC, has closed its doors and her career remains in limbo for the time being, female MMA superstar/hottie Gina Carano has no plans to slow down.
Before the collapse of ProElite, the company had been pushing a future fight between Carano and fellow top-tier female fighter Cris Cyborg. Carano still wants the fight to happen, and has committed to making it a reality, with or without EliteXC backing.
“I want to make (a fight against Cyborg) happen,” Carano told Fighters Only. “My people are in touch with her, so we’re going to make sure we sign together for the same promotion.” Many believed the leading candidate to land Carano and Cyborg was Affliction, but Carano thinks that Couture’s recent falling out with the clothing line company may put a wrench in those plans. “There’s a bit of a barrier between me and Affliction,” Carano said. “You know, with Randy and that whole thing. But if they approach me with an offer, who knows?”
So, could both Carano and Cyborg land in UFC? Dana White has stated that he does not think there are enough quality female fighters to build a division around, but Carano assures the world that, besides herself and Cyborg, there are plenty of good females working their way through the MMA ranks. They just have not received enough exposure to have their efforts recognized.
In related news, ProElite is apparently fighting Showtime’s planned November 17th auction of EliteXC’s assests, which includes the contracts of Carano, Cyborg and Kimbo Slice.
Looking to resuscitate its business, the company said it would pursue all available options to retain its assets, which include the contract of Kimbo Slice (real name: Kevin Ferguson). Possible actions include trying to raise additional capital, filing for bankruptcy, negotiating a settlement with Showtime, or filing a lawsuit to prevent the sale from going forward, according to an SEC filing.
Showtime, whose parent is CBS Corp., notified ProElite on Oct. 31 that it will auction off the company’s assets at a Los Angeles law firm on Nov. 17. The most valuable would appear to be the contract of one-time YouTube sensation Kimbo Slice. Also included are contracts with at least 13 other fighters, as well as a video library and the EliteXC and other brands.
You have to wonder what exactly ProElite is trying to save. Slice looked like he could carry the company until Seth Petruzelli embarrassed him on national television, and then an investigation was launched to determine if ProElite had actively encouraged Petruzelli to take an unsuccessful dive. The company then lost its TV deal with CBS, and would appear to have nowhere else to go. You’d think this would be a good time to cut and run, since we have a hard time imagining investors lining up to back a failed MMA promotion in this economy.
