Star Trek Now With Pretty Young Things

The release of J.J. Abrams’ Star Trek isn’t until May 8, but the trailer was released this weekend at theater showings of Quantum of Solace and so far it seems most fans are cautiously optimistic about what they’ve seen. First of all, the cast is young and sexy which means we don’t have to watch William Shatner’s ancient ass lumber around in an ill-fitting space suit. This is a good thing considering Shatner can’t really be taken seriously after the Priceline spokes gig and the recent unpleasantness he created by berating ex-castmate George Takei on YouTube for not inviting him to his gay wedding. (Takei says he did invite him.) So we’d rather watch Chris Pine run around shooting things and having sex with whoever he’s having sex with in that trailer. And we kind of like boyhood flashbacks. Some fans are balking at the opening scene of 10 year-old Kirk driving a Corvette like Steve McQueen to which we say, oh yeah, and everything else about Star Trek is totally realistic, right?
