It’s really easy to lose things in Tijuana. Once, we left our iPod on the counter at the Carnitas Uruapán because we were so damnned full that we just wanted to get out of there. But for the first time, a boxer seems to have gone missing there (ok, probably not the first time). Sugar Shane Mosely is asking loudly about the whereabouts of one Antonio Margarito, the current world welterweight champion and TJ resident, because they’ve agreed to a fight. But when they were supposed to meet at the Vegas offices of Margarito’s agent Top Rank Boxing to sign the paperwork, Margarito was a no-show.
“He’s hiding, nobody can find him,” Mosley said.”
Uh-oh. Has anyone checked the bathroom of the Carnitas Uruapán?
Money is the suspected cause of the delay, according to a source who asked to remain anonymous because he is not permitted to speak publicly. Mosley, the former four-time champion who is coming off of a knockout victory over Ricardo Mayorga, said he’s already made a significant compromise by agreeing to the revenue split for the fight that’s expected to occur in late January in Las Vegas.
“I’m more of the draw. I didn’t want to give him 50/50, but I wanted to get the fight done,” Mosley said. “I could’ve made more fighting [unbeaten Andre] Berto. I’ll bring most of the people to this fight. If he holds out any longer, I’m going to change the prices on him.”
We like this Roddy Roddy Piper “Just when you think you’ve got the answers, he changes the question” type of negotiation. But Magarito better come out of hiding and start fighting if he wants to make any money. With the economy being blamed for a loss of almost a million De La Hoya/Pacquiao pay-per-views, there’s no telling what he may be making when he does finally sign the contracts. While 50% of a carnitas sandwich is definitely something to fight over, we don’t necessarily think it’s big enough to fight for. Can you guys tell we’re hungry?
