A note to whoever’s handling the scheduling of the fights for Golden Boy Productions—wouldn’t it behoove you not to have the biggest fight of the year at a time when people are pinching their pennies during the frenzied Christmas shopping season? It’s going to be hard to justify paying 55 bucks for the Oscar De La Hoya-Manny Pacquiao fight when it’s between that and the Luis Miguel box set your grandmother’s been begging you for (and no, you can’t give her a bunch of burned CDs in lieu of). So between that and the horrible economy that we’re in (which no one could have predicted, not even the Golden Boy), it’s going to be hard to beat the 2.4 million pay-per-view buys that DLH—Mayweather, Jr. got last year. But Oscar’s ever hopeful that his payday in the ring as a fighter is going to be dwarfed by the checks he’s going to cash as the promoter. Why? Because all across this great land of ours, people came out to see him and Pacquiao talk in a press conference. Of course that reasoning only works to hype up the fight, and he can only say it knowing he’s going to clear about $40 million for a night of work (yes, yes, and all that training… we’ve been watching 24/7 on HBO). Check out Oscar’s words after the jump.
