Do You Have TiVo Guilt?

In another example of how we have just waaay too much shit in America (hey, we didn’t say it was a bad thing), there’s been an affliction hitting tens of families. It’s called TiVo guilt, and its symptoms are pretty simple. You know that episode of the Ghost Whisperer you (ahem, or your girlfriend) recorded that’s been sitting on your watch list for three months? Well, if every time you skip it to watch your recording of MSNBC calling the Obama victory for the 16th time, you get a little sad because you should really watch it, but don’t have time… and you don’t want to delete it because at some point it could probably… possibly… maybe get watched… you have TiVo guilt.
“You want to watch TV, and what do you have? You turn on your DVR and you have a homework assignment,” says Brad Berens, chief content officer for iMedia Communications, who analyzes how media advances change people’s behavior.
“Economists call this ‘opportunity costs’… You’re sitting there and you have to weigh, well, ‘I have to watch this thing, because I promised myself when I told TiVo … I want the whole season of that! Go get it! And go get things like it!’ And so you’ve committed to this decision and it’s a burden — suddenly your relaxation has turned into more work.”
Yeah, well mom calls this “get off your ass costs,” or for the unfortunately fired, “reduce your cost costs”… it’s called turning off the TV and getting rid of your TiVo. Don’t be a slave to your machines! Well, unless it’s an Xbox. They may take away our freedom, but we’ll damned if they take away our Call of Duty: World at War.
Are you afflicted with ‘TiVo guilt’? [CNN]
