Is MMA becoming the next Pro Wrestling? Maybe, but not in terms of popularity but the rate at which its fighters are dying. 28-year-old former MMA fighter Justin Levens was found dead last yesterday alongside his wife, Sarah McLean-Levens. And in shades of former WWE champ Chris Benoit’s horrible family murder-suicide last year, police are reporting that she was the victim of a murder-suicide. Not surprisingly, Levens was banned from the sport for using PEDs, a ban he was in the middle of when he apparently killed himself and his wife. Wow, this is getting beat.

Levens tested positive for oxymorphone in a drug test administered at [a] July 19 event. His alleged use of the prescription drug, a semi-synthetic opioid analgesic often used for the relief of moderate to severe pain, netted Levens a $1,000 fine and a six-month suspension that was set to run through Jan. 15, 2009.

Tragically, Levens is the second former member of the IFL’s Condors who may have taken his own life. Onetime teammate Jeremy Williams died on May 5, 2007, of what was believed to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Add to that the death earlier this year of Evan Tanner, who got lost in the woods and died of exposure. Ironically it was Tanner who Levens was brought in to fight at UFC, and now they’re both finito. It looks like MMA is becoming a major-league sport just like it wanted to, except for all the wrong reasons.
