In Honor Of Indicted Guv, Vegas Hockey Team Will Don Rod Blagojevich Prison Gear

Minor league squads, in any sport, always have the best promotions. And the Calgary Flames’ minor league hockey franchise, the Las Vegas Wranglers, is doing nothing to hurt that reputation.
In 2006, the team hosted a theme night based on Vice President Dick Cheney’s accidental face shooting of a hunting buddy, and a few weeks back team members donned mustaches to raise money for prostate cancer research. And now, in honor of the brazen stupidity of Illinois Governor Rod Blagojevich, who was indicted Tuesday for placing the Senate seat of President-elect Barack Obama up for auction, the team will wear old school chain gang unis on January 30 to show Blago the proper respect.
The Wranglers’ uniforms will feature broad, horizontal black and white stripes with mock prison numbers on the back of each jersey that begin with “ILLGOV” followed by the players’ actual number.
Following the game, the Las Vegas players will autograph their uniforms and auction them to the public to support the team’s various charities.
“Over the years we’ve asked our players to not look so tough for a cause,” said Wranglers president Billy Johnson in a team press release. “Once they had a lot of chirping from opposing players when we’ve dressed them in pink for cancer research. We owe them a game of looking a little sketchy. G-Rod helps us with that.”
Given the incredibly forthright manner in which Blago demanded payoffs in exchange for appointments to Obama’s seat, we wouldn’t be surprised if he called the team and asked for a cut of the night’s gate. The Wranglers need to give a little more than “appreciation,” right?
