John Costelloe A.K.A. “Johnny Cakes” Committed Suicide Perhaps Marks Beginning Of Sopranos Curse

John Costelloe who played Vito Spatafore’s gay love interest “Johnny Cakes” Witowski on the HBO hit drama The Sopranos was found dead in his Brooklyn apartment of apparent suicide on December 18, police confirmed yesterday. The 47 year-old firefighter turned actor died of a self-inflicted gunshot to the head on December 16 in the basement of his apartment, The New York Post reports. He was starring in an off-off-broadway revival of “Gang of Seven” at the time. His funeral was held December 23 and was attended by longtime friends and fellow Sopranos castmates Steve Buscemi and Joseph Gannascoli who played Vito. His family and friends report they had no idea he was in turmoil.
This is the second Sopranos actor in the news under tragic circumstances recently. Lillo Brancato, who played Mathew Bevilaqua on the show, was recently acquitted of murder after a two-year legal battle that accused the actor of murdering an off-duty cop during a break-in for drug money. One more and we have a trend.
