So what do you wait in line for? Movies? Food? Banks? Shoes? Out of all of the above, we’d have to agree that kicks are the most important. You can get a DVD after the movie comes out; ATMs aren’t that bad; and food can be substituted by a mix of love, affection and China White—you know, the boom boom stuff. But sneakers… man, there’s nothing that beats the feeling of a fine pair of limited edition Nikes in your rubber-gloved hand. That’s why we’re feeling the entrepreneurial little changos out in line in front of Walter’s, a clothing store in Atlanta. They’re waiting for the new Jordan 23s, dropping on Tuesday, to have and to hold—and of course to pawn off on eBay.

“It’s crazy what we do for shoes,” said 17-year-old Miguel Perez of Marietta, the first in line. “We’re sneaker heads.”

“You could sell them on eBay for $2,000 or $3,000,” said No. 2, Perez’s friend Christian Aragon, 17.

Walter’s salesman DeAngelo Martin expected the shoes to start a line outside the store on Decatur Street, but they didn’t think it would start this early. No sizes are guaranteed, so even those waiting now might not walk away with a new pair of Jordans that fits.

See, this is how fads start. First, there were baggy jeans which they said came from the prisoners who always got pants too big in the pen and they started liking them like that. Now, we’re going to get kids in limited edition sneakers that are three sizes too small, limping around like they’re injured. And this is how the world will get introduced to then Crips, 2.0.
