So, remember when we noted that MMA free agent Kimbo Slice, fresh from the demise of EliteXC, might be headed to Japan to compete for K-1?
That rumor has gained a little more strength with the announcement that Kimbo will be in Japan for K-1’s card on Saturday, though not in a fighting capacity. You know how mad the MMA purists got when Slice was handed the spotlight on a nationally-televised card, despite having very little professional experience?
This time around, Slice will be on the show as part of the broadcast team. And you thought he had no fight experience…
Kimbo Slice is scheduled to commentate at the K-1 World GP 2008 Final on Dec. 6, heating up rumors that the former Youtube sensation will continue his fight career in Japan.
Mike Kogan of FEG, the parent company of K-1 and DREAM, told MMAFighting.com that Slice will be ringside in Japan to handle his broadcast duties as a guest commentator alongside Kogan, Michael Schiavello and Ernesto Hoost.
This probably means that, once Slice’s EliteXC contract issues are handled, he will ply his trades in K-1. His reported first fight would be against that company’s heavyweight champion, Badr Hari, in a battle that has the potential to revitalize Slice’s career, relegate him to sideshow status, or ever delegitimize K-1’s brand, depending on your point of view.
The card will be broadcast live on HDNet at 3 a.m. EST Saturday, though we’re pretty sure they’ll replay this one at a more appropriate hour. The highlight of the night will be the FiELDS K-1 WGP 2008 Final, an 8-man knockout tournament for the K-1 Grand Prix crown, featuring Hari and a number of other fighters.
