Oh, athletes, even when you’re doing right it ends up so very, very wrong. Case in point, Manchester City’s Darius Vassell was coming home from the team’s Christmas party. Luckily for everyone, it didn’t get all rapey like Manchester United’s XXX-Mas party did last year, but this year’s did end in tragedy. Vasell was getting out of the cab he took home—because he wanted to be a good citizen and not drive drunk—when he was assaulted by two men who took his watch and jewels. So sad and everything, but it turns out that the night would’ve been a lot cheaper for Vassell had he not been disputing the cab fare that gave the perps the time to check out the bling he had all around him.

It is understood the attackers had not specifically targeted the former England international, but struck while the player reportedly disputed his taxi fare at the junction of Palatine Road and Barlow Moor Road in Didsbury at about 5.30am on Sunday.

As a funny sidenote—because this story is so, so tragic—is that new Brazilian Man City wunderkicker Robinho doesn’t drive in England because he’s scared to drive on the wrong side of the road. Ha! Maybe instead of throwing millions at Iker Casillas, the trilliionaire owners of Manchester City should just get chauffeurs for all their players. It might be cheaper and less deathly in the future.
