So it was this time last year when everyone wanted to know where Johan Santana was going to end up. Not only that, what team would pay him the ungodly amount he was asking for. That team would eventually be the Mets, and the ungodly amount he’d receive was $137.5 million over six years. This year’s Johan is CC Sabathia, but right behind him was the second runner-up in the AL Cy Young voting, Angels reliever Francisco Rodriguez. Thought was that he’d end up getting around $75 million over five years… but that was just as people started to use pig manure for gasoline and chipmunk meat came back into style.

But someone was going to pay him, and that team was again the New York Mets, who got him for a sum of $37 million over three years. And with that, Omar Minaya’s replacement for the injured Billy Wagner makes the GM’s dream of fielding an all-Latino team thismuchcloser. The 37-year-old Wagner won’t be back throughout all of ‘09, which just totally makes him and the last year of his contract expendable now. Hm. Maybe the Mets should make a run for Sabathia then with tall the non-Santana pitching problems they’ve had. And if they have problems with the non-Latino thing, maybe try telling Minaya he’s Cuban or something.
