Four out of five Spaniards and millions of others from 140 countries around the world held tickets to “El Gordo,” the world’s widest lottery pay out worth 2.4 billion euro (3.2 billion dollars) this month. The drawing took place at 11:00 this morning in Madrid with uniformed schoolchildren singing the winning numbers in a Gregorian chant, albeit an off-key one, but who cares when you’re getting richer than God? Yes, though the Christmas lottery is designed to pay big prizes to a wide variety of winners, the vast majority of ticket holders soon discover, after taking off work to watch the three-hour media spectacle in bars and restaurants, that they just bought into a tax on the ignorant–again. Though mathematicians say the probability of breaking even is less than 6%, for most Spaniards, “El Gordo” marks the beginning of the Christmas season. Video of the winning numbers being drawn is below.
