Cal State Northridge Basketball Coach Doesn’t Bail Out Son Who Helped His Players Steal From Best Buy

Oh, this is sad… or just a case of stupid criminal conspiracy. This past New Year’s Day, Cal State Northridge basketball players Deon Tresvant, Dallas Rutherford and Phannuel Gbewonyo went into a Best Buy store in nearby Porter Ranch, CA. This just happened to be the same store that the team’s coach’s son, Jeffery Braswell, worked. About an hour and a few PS3s later, the guys were on their way out the door without paying for anything. Well, they got busted this week and sent to the pokey, after which all the players posted bail. Notice we said players, because the coach—Bobby Braswell—decided to let his son hang out in the cell for a few days to understand what the hell he did.
Asked about not bailing out his son, Braswell said, “Just put it this way: I fulfilled a promise that I made. I told my children a long time ago there are some responsibilities they have, and we just did what we thought was best.” Asked how his son was after the experience, Braswell said, “He’s alive, he’s doing well, he’s home.”
Our parents always threatened us with keeping us in the holding cell if we ever got busted for shit, but we never believed them. On top of that, we never really believed a caring and loving parent like Braswell would do that. Well thank you, coach, for making us realize that our parents would’ve totally kept us in the pen for three days if we took that joy ride in 1994 our friends tried to convince us to take. Also, for showing us that it’s sometimes okay for parents to be assholes.
