Did Diego Maradona’s Morning Stogie Kill Chelsea’s Chances This Weekend Against Manchester United?

Whenever we’ve been greeted with a story about Diego Maradona waking up a hotel full of people, it’s usually because he’s been marching loudly to the beat of the Bolivian marching powder he’d been addicted to. So when we heard that Mr. Hand of God caused the ritziest hotel in Manchester to be evacuated, we wondered what the reason was. It turns out that the cigar Diego likes to enjoy in the morning set off the fire alarms at 7 AM, causing everyone in the place—including, oh by the way, Chelsea soccer team—to have to skedaddle out in the street in their bathrobes. As if the English didn’t have enough reason to hate him.
Stars including John Terry, Joe Cole and Frank Lampard waited for 40 minutes in near-freezing temperatures before getting the all-clear to go back inside the Radisson Edwardian hotel… Maradona was in Manchester to watch Argentinian striker Carlos Tevez turn out for United, though the player was left on the subs’ bench.
Officially, Greater Manchester Fire Service said it could not say what caused the alarm. But a fireman at the scene said: “It looks as though it was set off by Diego and his entourage smoking cigars on the 14th floor.”
Chelsea lost that game against Man U 3-0, which apparently was plenty for those scoring at home to cover any and all wagers. Maybe Diego had his Havana cigar money on the Red Devils, or maybe he just hates Roman Abramovich. Either way, we think Diego and his entourage should keep their eyes open for any random Englishmen coming at them with strange, killsey looks in the eyes. This might have been the move to make them snap.
