After ten years of futility by the Mexican national soccer team trying to beat the U.S. at home, some Mexicans have had enough. So to help El Tri prepare for the February 11th showdown with the U.S., the Record sports journal has teamed up with Radio Shacks in Mexico to hand out Voodoo dolls representing their northern neighbors. It’s nice to know when your training regiment isn’t enough, you’ll resort to the last-chance option for shady businessmen and spurned housewives.
An advertisement in the sports daily Record on Tuesday invited fans to clip coupons and redeem them at their local Radio Shack store for a voodoo-doll likeness of a U.S. player. The hope was that a little black magic might help Mexico break a decade of futility on the road versus its northern neighbor.
“We imagine a group of young people gathered around the TV supporting Mexico and applying punishments to our rivals so that the team can qualify,” Record said in a statement.
So this is what it’s about? Kickin’ it to the young peoples of Mexico so they can head over to their local Radio Shack and buy a radio along with their voodoo dolls? And Tsk Tsk, Radio Shack. That’s the last time I’m going to give you my phone number when I buy my batteries.
