Two runners in the ING Miami Marathon, 22 year-old Jynocel Basweti of Kenya and 34 year-old Moroccan Benazzouz Slimani of Venice, Italy, accidentally followed a video truck off the course, losing valuable time–but that didn’t stop Slimani from winning the race anyway. The mistake happened at about mile 20 when a cop erroneously ordered the video truck off the course and Basweti, who was in the lead, followed it. Slimani followed Basweti, but figured out sooner than Basweti that a mistake had occurred. By the time Basweti figured it out, Slimani had returned to lead the race. Basweti became very nervous and expended so much energy trying to regain his place in the lead pack that he was unable to regain momentum. Basweti went on to bolt past the others at Mile 25 and win $5,000 as the 2009 champion. Man, we’re exhausted just trying to figure all that out in our heads. Pass the Gatorade.
