As we mentioned before, we loved Darren Aronofsky’s The Wrestler. After the “ass-to-ass” scene in his Requiem for a Dream, we were curious to see exactly how Marisa Tomei would let it all hang out as *ahem* a professional entertainer. Oddly enough, it turns out that the best part of the movie was drug abusing, hard drinking, formerly washed-up actor Mickey Rourke’s performance as a steroid abusing, hard drinking, washed-up pro wrestler. Watching Rourke even made us wonder about what ever happened to the “Macho Man” Randy Savage (and if we drove out to New Jersey, could we get the lovely Miss Elizabeth to dance for us if we threw singles at her). As it turns out, we weren’t the only ones impressed by Rourke’s comeback performance.
Mickey Rourke… is in talks with Marvel Entertainment to possibly play Crimson Dynamo in “Iron Man 2,” adding to the already impressive list of actors — namely Tim Robbins and Sam Rockwell — who are currently rumored to be in negotiations to join the production.
Rourke is “in discussions to play a villain described as Tony Stark’s Russian alter ego, a heavily tattooed bruiser who is in the arms trade and battles Iron Man in his own nuclear-powered armored suit.” And while comic fans know that Crimson Dynamo is just one of many Iron Man baddies of Russian descent, Variety speculates in the report that he will be the villain who Iron Man faces of against in the follow-up to 2008’s hit comic book flick.
The first Iron Man is going to become one of the greatest movie franchises in Hollywood history. After watching The Wrestler, we can definitely see Mickey Rourke add to the series as a Russian arms dealer in a nuclear-powered suit throwing cars and spewing commie propaganda at Robert Downey Jr. But then again, if Marvel Entertainment just likes the idea of furthering the career of a troubled celebrity with experience abusing steroids, we want to throw this guy’s hat in the proverbial ring.
