Common Sense Media—which rates TV shows, movies and video games to parents— logged more than 50 hours watching NFL games this season and the 5,000 commercials that went with them. Now, it’s published a report that says half of the commercial breaks during games have at least one ad that featured sex, drugs (the legal kind) or booze in it. Hey, it’s better than watching the Saved By Zero or John Mellencamp belting out a song about his country again, isn’t it? A break down of what they found after the jump.
- 40 percent of games showed ads for erectile dysfunction drugs.
- 46.5 percent of the sexual or violent advertisements were promotions by the broadcast networks for their own programs.
- Almost 500 of the ads showed an increased form of violence, including murders, explosions and gunfights.
Granted, most of those last category were from ads touting any one of the CSI shows.
“We don’t object that they can advertise their products. It’s OK on the Howard Stern show at 2 a.m.,” [James Steyer, founder and CEO of CSM] said. “But here on the West Coast, you sit down with your kids to watch a football game on Sunday at 10 a.m. and ka-boom, they hit you right between the eyes. By 10:07, your 5-year-old is asking what erectile dysfunction means.”
Well, he’s going to have to find out about it some time, isn’t he? Again, we’d be more worried about the truck commercials—including the new Howie Long ads where he goes around emasculating dudes and tearing down families around the country— seeping into their brains.
